Bidar
BIDAR: Former Minister and Congress MLA Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli has kept everyone guessing whether he will quit Congress to join Bharatiya Janata Party. Asked about his next move by some newspapers, he said: “No comments for now.” It is widely debated in political circles of Bidar district that Mr. Nagamarapalli would be joining BJP on Monday in Bangalore. It is speculated that Mr. Nagamarapalli would be made the district in-charge Minister of Bidar replacing Revu Naik Belamagi, the Minister for Animal Husbandry. He was elected from Bidar constituency in May, this year. Mr. Nagamarapalli got elected to the Assembly in 1985 on a Janata Party ticket. Later, he won 1989 and 1994 elections on Janata Dal ticket. He joined the Congress in 1999 and lost the subsequent elections, but regained the seat in 2004. After the delimitation of Assembly seats in the State, Aurad became a reserved constituency for Scheduled Castes, and Mr. Nagamarapalli shifted to Bidar constituency and won the seat. Though he got a Congress ticket to contest from Bidar constituency in the Assembly elections, the victory did not come easily for him. He won the election by a margin of around 3,000 votes against his nearest rival Raheem Khan of Bahujan Samaj Party. Congress leaders told The Hindu on Sunday: “It is up to Mr. Nagamarapalli to decide whether he will remain in the party or join another party.” They said, “If Mr. Nagamarapalli decides to seek re-election either by contesting for Bidar Assembly seat or fight for Bidar parliamentary seat on other party ticket in the coming election, his defeat is certain.”
