GULBARGA: Police arrested four persons on Sunday at Super Market area of Gulbarga city after they objected to demolition of buildings undertaken by Gulbarga City Corporation (GCC) officials for roads-widening works.

The arrested were identified as Mahesh, Nagraj, Aslam, (lawyers) and Lakshman Rao. While demolition of the encroachments was going on, the four had entered into an argument with the police. The Chowk police have registered a case against them.

Demolition of encroached property was carried out at Super Market area on Sunday. An old vegetable market of the city corporation was razed.

At some places in the area, people cleared the marked portions by themselves.

Dilapidated

Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday, Gulbarga City Corporation Commissioner S.P. Mudhol said the old vegetable market was in a dilapidated state. Local people said it was built under the Nizam’s rule.

He said officials of Public Works Department and Town Planning had undertaken demarcation of portions of buildings to be demolished in the city for taking up road-widening works. Residents had been informed about it and their signatures had been taken.
