Jagajampi is Belgaum KSP chief

Belgaum: Basavaraj Jagajampi was elected president of Belgaum Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) in the elections held here on Sunday.

Mr. Jagajampi secured 1,358 votes and his nearest rival Appasaheb M. Alibadi polled 662 votes, according to reports reaching from taluk centres to the district headquarters.

Of the total 2,913 voters spread over 10 taluks of the district, 2,023 (69.44 per cent) exercised their franchise. Three votes were declared invalid by the district returning officer and tahsildar L. Bhima Naik.

The number of votes polled in the election to the post of president of the Central Kannada Sahitya Parishat were not immediately available.

Mr. Jagajampi, a retired principal of KLE Society’s Lingaraj College, has been identified as a nominee of the KLE Society and the Naganur Math. He will be the eight president of the Belgaum district KSP.

After the results were announced, Mr. Jagajampi garlanded the statue of Rani Chennamma and Sangoli Rayanna and went to Lingayat Bhavan where a large number of his supporters were waiting to greet him.

In Dharwad

D.M. Hiremath and A.B. Hiremath were elected presidents of Dharwad and Gadag district units of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, respectively, in the elections held on Sunday.

Of the total 1,034 voters in Dharwad district, 672 exercised their franchise. Mr. D.M. Hiremath polled 422 votes, while his rival Hanumakshi Gogi got 245 votes. Seven votes were declared invalid. Three candidates were in the fray for election to the post of president of the Gadag district Kannada Sahitya Parishat. Of the total 1,091 voters in the district, 855 exercised their franchise. Five votes were declared invalid. Mr. A.B. Hiremath got 422 votes, followed by Premakka Binkadakatti (260) and Ravindra Koppar who got 168 votes.

Maruti Shidlapur was elected unopposed as president of Haveri district Kannada Sahitya Parishat on Sunday.
