Utilise NSS services

Though the policy of both the Central and the State Governments is to achieve total literacy in the country, a majority of the rural folk remain illiterate. This is due to the scant interest evinced in rural adult education by the Government. Of late, the Central government has introduced the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and allocated huge funds to this programme, with a view to imparting quality education to the rural folk. Despite all the efforts, adult education still remains a neglected area. In this context, the National Service Scheme introduced in the degree colleges long ago has been doing yeoman service to the rural folk. The student volunteers of this unit in the colleges have been periodically visiting villages and doing lot of social service, besides educating the illiterate adults. The services of this unit can be used in all possible places to achieve complete literacy.

Take steps to check accounts

Some universities in Andhra Pradesh appear to have neglected and thrown to the winds the concept of transparency, which is the hallmark for any institution, more so with universities. The Finance Department insists that universities have to submit annual accounts every year before release of block grants. It appears that crores of rupees are lying with a few universities. The universities concerned appear to say since they are autonomous institutions, they don’t need to report to the Finance Department. It is time the authorities took necessary steps to ensured that all universities submit their annual accounts.

A role model

Lok Sabha Speaker Somanath Chatterjee played an important role in conducting the debate and voting last month. The trust vote episode in the backdrop of the nuclear deal was handled in a very decent manner and undoubtedly the entire credit goes to Mr. Chatterjee. He already proved his mettle as best parliamentarian and upheld the dignity of the House on several occasions. The trust vote issue is a clear example to showcase his commitment towards democracy, constitution and Parliament. Mr. Chatterjee, for sure, is a role model of politicians of the future generations.

Double duties

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation is operating several services from Nellore district to different parts of the State. Unfortunately the drivers pressed into service are performing double duties, i.e. the duties of driver and conductor. This is more prevalent in the buses touching Tirupati. The drivers have to start the buses only after issuing tickets to commuters and receiving fares from them. We don’t know whether it is a measure to save money or to reduce the staff in a phased manner. The APSRTC authorities are requested to depute drivers and conductors to all buses.
