ACB raids

It has become a routine affair to go through the news about Anti-Corruption Bureau raids, very often conducted on Regional Transport Authority’s offices State-wide. But there appears to be no let-up in the circumstances that force such raids. It takes no time to arrive at reasons leading to such incidents. Can’t this be stopped and media spared of reporting this unsavoury news?

Introduce part-time BL course

In India, there are many universities offering degree and post-graduate courses through part-time and distance mode. But it is surprising that none of them offer Bachelor of Law through part-time or distance mode. The reason is that the Bar Council of India has not given permission to teach this course though part-time/evening/distance mode on the grounds of falling standards. But some universities are offering LL.M. through this mode. As almost all the courses are being offered through correspondence and candidates who obtained degrees through this process are even employed in USA and the UK, there is no point in not offering BL course. I appeal to the BCI to grant permission to universities to offer BL through part-time or distance learning.

Unattended streetlight

For the last two months, the tubelight on pole no. 79/A is not glowing as it got damaged or because of a loose connection. Numerous complaints have been made through the call centre and at least half a dozen times I spoke to the Assistant Engineer concerned Srinivasa Rao. Every time, we were told that a new fitment was given to the contractor to replace the old one that’s hanging and it would be done the next day. Unfortunately, this has not happened yet. I request the GVMC authorities to look into the matter and do the needful.

Ambitious plan

The proposal of a ‘dustbin-free’ city is welcome. Hitherto, lot of money is spent on engaging contract labour to keep Visakhapatnam clean. But the results are not commensurate with the funds spent. This is mainly due to the lack of supervision by the public health department of GVMC. The waste being collected is being dumped into open drains with insufficient dust bins. Added to this, petty vendors with their pushcarts and stationary kiosks are littering the roads. The GVMC has to initiate punitive action on these vendors and unauthorised kiosks which cause congestion and nuisance to many households. In some colonies, welfare associations are active and their cooperation may be sought by the GVMC to make the new ‘dustbin-free’ scheme a success.
