HOSUR: The Communist Party of India on Sunday made it clear that it will not remain in the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance. The party does not want to be a part of the coalition, which also has the Congress, CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan said. Talking to mediapersons after the conclusion of the two-day State executive committee meeting here, he said the decision was in tune with the CPI’s national stand of forming a new political front without the Congress and the BJP. Reacting to the latest statements issued by senior DMK leaders, he said that the DMK seemed to have taken its stand already and launched an anti-communist campaign. Even Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi seemed to have made up his mind to carry on without the Left. The CPI, in consultation with the CPI (M), would try to form a new alliance in Tamil Nadu with like-minded parties. Mr. Bardhan said that more parties were joining hands with the Left to form a new political front opposing the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and communal forces. It was a new beginning, he said, adding that he did not wish to speculate. Nuclear dealMr. Bardhan warned that pushing ahead with the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal would compromise the sovereignty of nation. He feared that the U.S. might compel India to accept some of the conditions to get the approval of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. The Left parties, he said, would oppose the proposed naval exercise to be taken up jointly by the Indian Navy and the U.S. forces in the Arabian Sea. An agitation would be launched. Mr. Bardhan said inflation and rise in prices of essential commodities had imposed a crushing burden on people. The poor and the middle class families were badly affected . Mr. Bardhan, along with CPI national secretary D. Raja, deputy general secretary Sudhakar Reddy, State secretary D. Pandian and senior leaders, attended the meeting.
