BIJAPUR: Two farmers in Bijapur district committed suicide by consuming poison recently.

They have been identified as Satyappa Macchandi (50), a grape grower of Nadoni village in Bijapur taluk, and Shankarappa Pyati (60), a sugarcane grower of Agarkhed village in Indi taluk.

According to the police, Satyappa had borrowed Rs. 8 lakh from State Bank of India and Rs. 1 lakh from a credit society for grape cultivation. Due to untimely rain in February and March, the crop was destroyed, and he did not get compensation from the Government.

Shankarappa had borrowed Rs. 80,000 for growing sugarcane crop.

Though the crop was not harvested, he failed to get the benefit of loan waiver benefit and took the extreme step, the police said.
