KSP elections : turnout poor in Bangalore Urban district

Bangalore: Elections to the post of president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) and the district unit posts of president were held across the State on Sunday.

Prominent persons, including poets G.S. Shivarudrappa and Sumatindra Nadig, former Director of Kannada and Culture Y.K. Muddukrishna, actor Ashok and educationist M.R. Doreswamy, MLC, exercised their franchise at the National High School in Basavanagudi, Bangalore.

Although the ambience was festive and comparable with that of the Assembly elections, the voter turnout in the Bangalore Urban district was poor. While Kannada activist C.K. Rame Gowda was declared elected from Bangalore Urban district, reports from other districts were awaited.

Peaceful

Returning officer K. Nagaraju told The Hindu that the polling was peaceful in all districts.

The overall voter turnout and other details were awaited.

The results of the district unit posts would be announced in the respective districts as and when the counting concludes.But the results of the State-level post of presidentwould be announced on August 26, he said.

Contenders

There were seven candidates in the fray for the post of the State-level president of the parishat.

But the fight was among three retired professors of Kannada — R.K. Prasad (Nallor Prasad), C. Veeranna and S. Vidyashankar.

The others in the fray were Lakshmana Rao Gogi, Ma. Chi. Krishna, Sosale Javaraiah and G.V. Prabhakara Rao.
