New fee for six medical colleges

Special Correspondent

State quota fee is Rs.45,000

From Rs.4,35,000 to Rs.4,71,000 for management quota

Decision arrived at an emergency meeting on Sunday

KOCHI: A joint meeting of the Admission Supervisory and Fee Regulatory Committee for Professional Colleges on Sunday, chaired by the former judge P.A. Mohammed, arrived at a decision on the fee structure for the six medical colleges which had entered into an agreement with the government.

While the annual fee for seats under the government quota will be Rs.45,000 for the six medical colleges, the fee for the management seats will vary from Rs.4,35,000 to Rs.4,71,000.

Under the new decision, Rs.4,35,000 will be the fee fixed for the management seats of Karuna Medical College, Palakkad; SUT Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; and Kannur Medical College, Kannur. CSI Medical College, Karakkonam, is allowed to collect Rs.4,37,000 and MES Medical College, Perinthalmanna, Rs.4,65,000 while Sree Gokulam Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, can collect Rs.4,71,000.

Mr. Mohammed said the committee convened an emergency meeting in a bid to adhere to the schedule announced by the Entrance Commissioner for admission to the professional colleges.

The new decision was taken in the wake of the Supreme Court observation on the issue. He said the issue pertaining to the admission to those colleges which did not sign a pact with the government was under the consideration of the court.

Mr. Mohammed said the meeting was convened as the government could not obtain approval for the consensual agreement entered into between the government and the medical management association. It was pointed out that a notification for second allotment to MBBS course had to be made on or before August 24, as per the schedule. Non-adherence to the schedule would mean violation of MCI guidelines.

The petition for the approval of the consensual agreement filed before the Supreme Court was withdrawn in view of the observation that the government had to approach the committee for necessary orders with regard to the fee structure involved in the consensual agreement.

The committee observed that the total number of seats available to the government from all the six colleges as a result of surrendering 50 per cent would be around 275.

After following the reservation norms, 65 per cent of these 275 seats will be available to students in the general category .

Special Correspondent adds from Thiruvananthapuram: In the Cooperative Medical College, Kochi and Academy of Medical Sciences, Pariyaram, Kannur, the fee for the 50 per cent merit seats is Rs.25,000 while that for the 35 per cent management seats is Rs.4.35 lakh, according to a release issued here by the office of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. The options can be rearranged or revised on the website www.cee.kerala.gov.in/keam from 10 a.m. on August 25 to 5 p.m. on August 27.
