CONGRATS: M. Chidambaram, Director, National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi, greeting V.Ganapathi Subramanian (centre) and E. Vinod of TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, on Sunday. TIRUCHI: Though tough to crack, the oral round of the Tiruchi Materials Quiz (TMAQ ’08) conducted on Sunday by the Indian Institute of Metals, Tiruchi Chapter, provided the top three teams the much needed insight into the extent of efforts that victory would warrant at the Brahm Prakash Memorial International Quiz with prize money of US $ 500 at IGCAR, Kalpakkam, on September 19-20, 2008. The finals conducted at the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi, comprised nine rounds on topics such as nanotechnology; chemical warfare materials; materials and their uses; tirade round, and curious connections. There were 560 participants consisting of Plus One and Plus Two students for the preliminary written round held earlier this month at seven zonal locations: Tiruchi, Karaikudi, Neyveli, Sankar Nagar, Mayiladuthurai, and Karur. Fifty six teams were chosen for the oral rounds out of which eight teams took part in the finals. Ganapathi Subramanian V. and Vinod E. of TVS Matric Higher Secondary School, Madurai, with a score of 45 points were adjudged winners and honoured with certificates and prize money of Rs. 5,000. S. Subramanian and Balaji Srinivasan of Sri Jayendra Swamigal Silver Jubilee Matric HSS Tirunelveli came second with 44 points and took home Rs. 3,000. The winners of the third prize of Rs. 2,000 comprised Aravindh P.G. of Arokyamatha Matric Higher Secondary School, Karumandapam and Gautham S. of Maxewell Matric Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur, with a score of 41 points. These students representing Madurai, Sankar Nagar and Tiruchi zones will participate in the International Quiz next month. The pattern of the finals was similar to the finals of the last year’s International Quiz. Through the exposure, the IIM – Tiruchi Chapter is keen to open an account in the prestigious event, R. Easwaran, Chairman, TMAQ ’08 said in his briefing about the event. Distributing prizes to winners at the valedictory session, B. Pattabhiraman, Managing Director, GB Group of Companies, spoke of the importance of trainings for perfecting memory of students.
