This Day That Age
Chinese Communist guns on August 24 launched a new heavy bombardment of Quemoy, Kuomintang Chinese-held island, just off the mainland. Communist planes also strafed the island, according to a Defence Ministry communiqué. A Kuomintang Chinese communiqué said that eight MIG jet aircraft invaded the Quemoy skies and strafed Quemoy proper. A defence spokesman, rear-admiral Liu Hoh-Tu, said the Communist action was another instance of a “stepped-up challenge”, to the Kuomintang outpost island’s defence. Chinese Communist and Kuomintang warships clashed about eight miles south of Quemoy. The Defence Ministry in Taipeh (Formosa) said it had received preliminary reports of the clash. The Communist bombardment of Quemoy stopped after nearly two hours, the Defence Ministry announced.
