Letters to the Editor
When actor Shabana Azmi said on a television show that Indian polity has been unfair to Muslims she told us all to stop pretending. But how dare she do that? Ours is a nation that believes in pretending. Does it matter whether in fact she can buy a house in Mumbai or not? What matters is that we continue to believe there is nothing wrong with our society and its fabric. It is, therefore, essential that we silence people like Ms Azmi because the alternative — of taking an honest look at ourselves — is too awful to contemplate. Mirza Yawar Baig, Hyderabad The Indian Constitution guarantees full freedom of worship and equal social, economic and political rights to all citizens irrespective of caste, creed or religion. So when Shabana finds it difficult to buy a property in Mumbai (which, she claims, is because she is a Muslim), she should not blame the system or the polity. Hers may be an isolated instance and there may be other reasons for her inability to buy a house. V. Venkitasubramanian, Kochi
