Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article “Ideal and reality: media’s role in India” (Aug. 19). Today, the media do not behave responsibly because they are controlled by those who have money and power. Earlier, the media’s agenda was driven by the masses and they revolutionised society. Today, they are interested only in making money and serving the needs of the powerful. Gazanfer Ali, Udaipur The media have a great responsibility to help the cause of the common man. But we find that both the electronic and print media leave much to be desired. They are controlled by powerful people, which is why there is a disconnect between the media and the common man. Politics, business, and their own ideology seem to drive the media’s coverage of issues. They believe that everything they present in the name of news and entertainment is acceptable to the people, which is wrong. The so-called ‘reality’ shows, sponsored cricket, astrology, saas-bahu serials, ghost-thrillers, etc., are not the choice of the common man. The media not only inform people but also help them form opinions on issues. They have the power to initiate social change. They can bring about reforms if they use their power responsibly. Bhagyendra Patel, New Delhi
