Double delight for Vishnu and Bharath

KOCHI: Kozhikode’s Vishnu Prasad, who is looking at doubles seriously to find a way into the junior national team, won the under-19 boys’ singles title in the BPCL Kochi Refinery all-Kerala open junior badminton tournament at the Kochi Refinery Stadium, Ambalamugal, on Sunday.

After jolting the top seed, Neeraj Rehman, in the semifinals, the unseeded Vishnu, a first year Civil Engineering student at the Cochin University here, appeared to be in some early trouble in the final against Thrissur’s N.R. Renjith, a player he had lost to in the recent Savithri Saboo tournament in Kozhikode.

“I found the shuttle a bit of a problem. I took time to settle down,” said Vishnu. He bounced back nicely to outwit Renjith with some attacking play after losing the opening game. Vishnu went on to win a double, with his partner Neeraj Rehman.

Also winning double titles were Ernakulam’s V.H. Bharath (under-16 boys), M.R. Arjun (under-13 boys) and Thiruvananthapuram’s J.K. Malavika (under-13 girls).

E. Nandakumar, Executive Director, BPCL Kochi Refinery, gave away the prizes.

The results (finals):

Boys: Under-13 singles: M.R. Arjun (Ekm) bt Aarush Setia (Ekm) 21-17, 21-5.

Under-16 singles: V.H. Bharath (Ekm) bt Sharon Raphael (Ekm) 21-16, 21-14. Doubles: V.H. Bharath & Pranav Satheesh (Ekm) bt Arun George & Sharon Raphael (Ekm) 19-21, 21-16, 21-19.

Under-19 singles: Vishnu Prasad (Kzd) bt N.R. Renjith (Tsr) 10-21, 21-13, 21-15. Doubles: Vishnu Prasad & Neeraj Rehman (Kzd) bt Midhun Haridas & S. Sunjith (Tsr) 21-14, 21-8.

Girls: Under-13 singles: J.K. Malavika (Tvm) bt S. Sruthi (Tvm) 19-21, 21-10, 21-19. Doubles: J.K. Malavika & S. Sruthi (Tvm) bt Niranjana Anil & V.H. Pavithra (Ekm) 21-10, 21-8.

Under-16 singles: Daya Elsa Jacob (Ekm) bt Sneha Santhilal (Pkd) 21-10, 21-11. Doubles: Boneetha Bose (Ekm) & Sneha Santhilal (Pkd) bt J.K. Malavika & S. Sruthi (Tvm) 21-12, 21-14.
