No compromise
Anasuya Menon
Inevitable: Customers now want designer cards.
Though costs are steadily going up, South Indians, especially in the Coimbatore region, do not hesitate in splurging on wedding cards. Invitation cards are an inevitable component in wedding expenses. Even with the entry of e-cards, Indian weddings are not complete without the cards, which now come in designer patterns. “People are not willing to compromise on the quality of th
e card. More and more customers want designer cards, which can cost even up to Rs.100 a card. The basic ones are rarely an option,” says Mohana Sundaram, owner of Priyadarshini Cards.
They, however, are cutting down on the number of cards, he observes. For instance, if they used to order about 3,000 cards earlier, the number has come down to 1,500, he says. “The Internet has dealt a huge blow to the greeting card industry. But, in the case of wedding cards, the market is still the same,” he added. Readymade cards have their market intact and so have special designer cards, says N. Murugan, Assistant Manager of Olympic Cards. “Though prices have gone up, we have increased the rates of only corporate cards and visiting cards owing to the competition in the wedding card business,” he says. Though cards are available from Rs.10 onwards, there are very few who choose such cards for weddings, he says.
