Currently on at Fort Kochi, Gandhi Nagar, Palarivattom stations Hospital for drug abuse victims to be constructed at Fort Kochi KOCHI: The community policing initiative which is being implemented officially in three police stations, is likely to be extended more areas in the city. The Janamaitri Suraksha Paddhathi, which is being implemented across the State, is on at Fort Kochi, Gandhi Nagar and Palarivattom police stations. Even before the community policing was implemented across the State, the City Police had made much advancement in the area. It had established good rapport with residents associations in the area. In fact, the Police Residents Association Initiative in District Ernakulam (PRIDE), the platform for interaction between the City Police and residents associations in the city, had been successful in bridging the gap between the two. Minor complaints are settled at the Circle Inspector level and serious ones are taken up at the monthly meetings. Now, the City Police are planning to extend the features of Janamaitri Suraksha Paddhathi to the rest of the police stations in the city limits, in an informal way. Coordination committees have been formed at all the 20 police stations. InterfaceThese committees, which are usually 30 to 35-member strong, will include prominent personalities in the area and will serve as the interface between the local police station and residents in that area.Issues taken up by these committees will be discussed at the meetings convened by the Circle Inspector concerned and will be monitored by the City Police Commissioner. Along with the mandatory projects taken up under the Janamaitri scheme, the City Police have worked out more with the aim of reaching out to the public. One of the main proposals being readied is constructing a hospital for rehabilitation of drug abuse victims at the 10 cents owned by the department at Fort Kochi. “The proposal has been approved and plan of the building is awaiting approval as the construction is to be made in an heritage area,” said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner. Tourist welfare scheme for Fort Kochi-Mattancherry tourism circle, welfare scheme for single women and senior citizens and a reward for best police-citizen are other projects on the anvil. The Best Police-Citizen award will be given to those who have assisted the police in preventing or detecting a crime. The award carries a medal and a purse of Rs. 5,000. “ The concept has been approved and awards will be presented from next month onwards,” said Mr. Abraham.
