Two robbed of Rs. 2.58 lakh by auto driver, accomplices

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A father-son duo was robbed of Rs. 2.58 lakh near the Red Fort here by an auto-rickshaw driver and his accomplices on Sunday.

The incident took place when Naveen Makkar (45) and his son Mayank (18), residents of Bahadurgarh in Haryana, who had arrived at the Nizamuddin railway station in the morning from Bangalore, were going to Inter-State Bus Terminus in an auto-rickshaw. They boarded the auto-rickshaw, in which a stranger was already travelling, from Sarai Kale Khan.

Another stranger joined them on the way. The auto-rickshaw was near Raj Ghat when Mr. Makkar felt that the two other occupants were trying to open his luggage. An alarmed Mr. Makkar asked the driver to stop, but to no avail. His son, who was seated with the driver, tried to offer resistance at which he was pushed out of the vehicle. On the road behind the Red Fort, the culprit also pushed Mr. Makkar out of the auto-rickshaw, took the money from his bag and abandoned it along with the vehicle before fleeing. The police have identified the auto-rickshaw owner and are trying to trace the driver with his help.
