DEVELOPMENT: Concreting of the stretch between Hampankatta Circle and Giriyas shop on K.S. Rao Road in Mangalore has been completed. This will be upgraded to a four-lane road in the second phase.

MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) will upgrade the stretch between Mary Hill Junction and Kavoor Junction on the airport road to a four-lane concrete road shortly. The stretch between Bejai Church and Karnataka Polytechnic Junction on the Lalbagh-KPT Junction Road will also be upgraded to a four-lane concrete road.

Mayor Ganesh Hosabettu told The Hindu that these development projects would be taken up under grants from the State Finance Commission (SFC). The concreting work on the stretch between KSRTC Junction, in front of Bharat Mall, and Lalbagh Junction would commence from September 1, he added.

At present, the stretch between Mary Hill Junction and Kavoor Junction on the airport road is being developed into a two-lane concrete road by the Karnataka Land Army Corporation Ltd (KLACL) for the corporation. The work began more than two years ago. As per the original plan, this stretch should have been converted into a four-lane concrete road. Dearth of funds and problems in land acquisition forced the authorities to limit the work to laying a two-lane concrete road.

Mr. Hosabettu said that now the State Government had allocated funds for the project. Problems in land acquisition would soon be solved. The KLACL would lay the two more lanes to make it a four-lane concrete road, he said. M. Shankar Bhat, chief whip in the corporation council, said that this stretch was a bottleneck as the stretch from KPT Junction to Mary Hill Junction on the airport road had been upgraded to four-lane concrete road.

The Mayor said that the stretch between Kavoor Junction and Maravoor bridge would be developed into a four-lane concrete road. This work would be taken up after completing the work on the stretch between Mary Hill Junction and Kavoor Junction.

Mr. Hosabettu said that the concreting of the K.S.R. Road was going on at a brisk rate. It had begun on August 10 and in two weeks’s span, the concreting had been completed up to the Giriyas shop from Hampankatta Circle. One lane from the Giriyas shop to Kerala Samajam building had also been concreted till Sunday.

After completing the concreting of road from Hampankatta Circle till South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank Junction (SCDCC), the second phase of the concreting work would be taken up from SCDCC Junction to PVS Circle via Navbharat Circle, he said.

The Mayor said that the land owners near Hampankatta Circle were being talked to over land acquisition for road widening. Three lanes had been laid in the area. The stretch between Hampankatta Circle and PVS Circle would be a four-lane concrete road and the requisite land would be acquired soon, he said.
