Funds distributed to service organisations

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram disbursed funds to service organisations at an event organised on Sunday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Madras Round Table 1 (MRT-1).

He also unveiled a plaque with details of 16 government schools to which Rs. 1.4 crore was donated through Madras Round Table-1 for the construction of 51 classrooms.

Many of the beneficiaries were championing the rights and education of children. This, he said, was appropriate since every child was an invaluable resource. While healthy children with proper training and sufficient opportunities contributed to a healthy economy, those with disabilities should not be left behind.

The State government’s Activity-Based Learning was making schooling attractive. The government was trying its best to promote this concept through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and other schemes, but it was the quiet, noble and generous efforts of not-for-profit organisations that helped to sustain the drive towards an educated society.

Sethu Vaidyanathan, chairman, Madras Round Table 1, recalled the history of the oldest round table in India, which was started in 1957 for young people aged 18-40 to engage themselves in “non-sectarian, non-political” service to society. Pallipattu Seva Samajam, Mathru Mandir, Vidyasagar, Tulir and Save a Child’s Heart received funds.
