Fight for land: Activists staging a dharna as part of the second phase of the ‘Bhoo Poratam’ in Hyderabad on Sunday.
HYDERABAD: As a part of their land struggle in the city, the CPI (M) activists and the poor put up flags on a five-acre land adjacent to B.S. Maktha in the Somajiguda area and raised slogans demanding that the government allot house sites to the poor immediately.
Led by K.N. Rajan, City Committee member, about 400 people entered the vacant spot adjacent to the railway track on the Hussain Sagar lake and pitched party flags as a symbolic gesture that they had taken over the land. Police was posted heavily on the entry point of the site to prevent activists from entering the spot.

But the activists entered from the railway-track side leaving the police stunned. They spread all over the five-acre area and police tried to disperse them using force.
Later, the activists took out a rally in B.S. Maktha demanding the government to allot house sites immediately. Mr. Rajan said the site was identified during the first phase of land struggle last year and it was saved from land sharks by the left activists.
He alleged that some Congress leaders were eyeing the land and made efforts to encroach it also. But their efforts went in vain with strong opposition from poor people.
