Coastal corridor move opposed

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: The proposals for coastal corridor and petrochemical and petroleum industries between Kakinada and Visakhapatnam were strongly opposed by speakers at the State-level workshop on coastal corridor, organised by the Keratam Network here on Sunday. The speakers called upon all sections to wage a united fight till the proposals were dropped.

Pathanjali Sastry of Rajahmundry-based Centre for Environment said that the coastal corridor proposal would be ruinous to all sections, specially fishermen, weavers and farmers. He also referred to the proposed thermal power plants in Polatitippa (Krishna district) and near Naupada in Srikakulam district and wondered how district officials cleared these proposals because they had clearly violated the provisions of the Coastal Regulation Zone Act.

Welcoming the gathering, convener of the AP Traditional Fishermen’s Association, Arjili Das, alleged that the government was indifferent to the feelings of fishermen and others whose lives would be adversely affected by the proposal.
