KOLKATA: Amar Singh, general secretary of the Samajwadi Party, said in Singur on Sunday that Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee was a leader of peasants from whom land was being taken, and appealed to her to go to Uttar Pradesh and provide leadership to the movement against acquisition of farmland there. “Wherever peasants in India are falling victim to police firing, wherever farmland is being acquired forcibly, we are together”, Mr. Singh said, after apologising for his party’s support to the Left “for several years in the past out of political compulsions.” Mr. Singh said he heard of the governments in Maharashtra, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh inviting the Tata Motors to invest in the their States. “If they are calling, you go...,” he said. Social activist Medha Patkar said the Tata Motors would not be welcomed by the people of Maharashtra in the event of the company responding positively to an appeal by the Chief Minister of that State to relocate the car-manufacturing factory there.
