SFI lays siege to college

Staff Reporter

Protest: SFI activists lay siege to the office of NSS College, Manjeri, on Monday in protest against the college authorities’ refusal to hold elections.

MANJERI: The Students Federation of India (SFI) launched an indefinite agitation at the NSS College here on Monday in protest against the college authorities’ refusal to conduct college union elections.

SFI activists laid siege to the college office. The college did not function on Monday, as teachers refused to take classes.

Inaugurating the agitation, SFI State secretary A.N. Shamzeer warned the Principal against sticking to his view that elections would not be held at the college. Elections were held in all colleges under the Calicut University except four NSS Colleges, and Amal College, Nilambur. The SFI had launched an agitation along with other student bodies at Amal College. It was later suspended.

The other colleges under NSS management that have refused to hold elections are at Nenmara, Ottappalam and Palakkad. The elections were, however, held at NSS College, Mattannur, under the Kannur University. “If they can hold polls at Mattannur, why not in the four other colleges under Calicut University?” asked SFI leaders.

The Calicut University Syndicate had directed all colleges affiliated to it to hold elections in the presidential pattern. The Syndicate also decided to impose a ban on students of colleges that do not hold elections. The students from these colleges will not be allowed to take part in the university arts and sports festivals. Hence, they will be denied grace marks and other benefits. Mr. Shamzeer refuted the claim of the NSS College Principal that the management that could decide whether to hold elections or not. He said the court verdict on college elections had left it to the discretion of the Principal.

SFI district secretariat member K. Shareef addressed the agitators. SFI unit secretary Shameer M. welcomed the gathering.
