Kalapet violence: Ministers meet Lt. Governor

Puducherry Ministers talking to mediapersons after meeting the Lieutenant Governor on Monday.

PUDUCHERRY: Following incidents of violence in Kalapet after the Congress Legislative Party meeting, five Ministers of the Union Territory met Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar at Raj Nivas on Monday evening, seeking action against the culprits.

Talking to mediapersons, Industries Minister V. Vaithilingam along with Ministers E. Valsaraj, M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, Malladi Krishna Rao and M. Kandasamy said the vehicle of Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanasamy, a number of vehicles plying across the stretch and public were attacked after the CLP meeting.

“This is the third time that such incidents of violence have occurred in the north police limits. Why is that no action being taken and what is the police department doing during such cases?” Mr. Vaithilingam said, holding a senior official in the north police limits responsible for such incidents.

The Ministers asked the Lt. Governor to take action against the senior official for the incidents.

“No political decision was announced after the CLP meeting. There was no necessity for such violence,” he added.

Health Minister Valsaraj said the Lt. Governor had convened two meetings regarding the law and order situation prior to the arrival of the Union Ministers to Puducherry.

“The meeting decided to come up with foolproof security measures but the violence occurred just 50 metres from the venue,” he said and added that the attacks which occurred on Monday seemed to be pre-planned.

Welfare Minister Kandasamy said such incidents would affect the reputation of the Congress party.

Governor’s assurance

A release from Raj Nivas said the Lieutenant Governor has assured the delegation that the government would not hesitate to take stern action, against the officials concerned, if there is any dereliction of duty.
