Attacks on minorities in Orissa flayed

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has regretted the renewed attacks on Christian missionaries in Orissa.

In a statement here on Monday, he called for strong measures to protect the minorities, particularly the priests and nuns, working in different parts of Orissa. Reports from Phulbani in Orissa indicated that priests and nuns, including several Malayalis, were remaining trapped inside forests after an attack on the Christ Raj Church by VHP activists. Among those remaining trapped were five nuns and 112 students. Although they had sought police assistance, no help was being extended to them. There was also an attack on the Bishop’s House at Bhubaneswar. He said the current spate of attacks were the fallout of the Orissa government’s refusal to initiate stern action against those involved in earlier attacks.
