PWD tendering system to be revamped: Minister

Special Correspondent

Public Works Secretary to prepare blueprint

Tenders to be publicised in a better way

NH maintenance to be taken up before Onam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Public Works Minister Mons Joseph said on Monday that the government proposed to revamp the tendering system for public works.

Addressing a press conference after a review meeting here, the Minister said the present system facilitated several undesirable tendencies such as formation of caucus by contractors. So, the Secretary (Public Works) had been asked to prepare a blueprint for a new system, he said.

Besides, steps would be taken for publicising of the tenders in a better way through the Information and Public Relations Department. Arrears to contracts were being cleared, he added.

The Minister said a target date could not be specified for completion of the City Roads Development Project in Thiruvananthapuram. Work could be started only after the electric lines were shifted by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). Discussions had been scheduled with the KSEB Chairman to find an early solution, Mr. Joseph said.

The maintenance of National Highways would be taken up before Onam. The detailed project report for four-laning of NHs 17 and 47 was ready. A meeting had been scheduled with National Highways Authority of India Chairman Gokul Ram on September 1 for finalising the alignment, he said.

Mr. Joseph said the scheme for heavy maintenance of roads to Sabarimala was ready. Work under the Kerala State Transport Project would be reviewed in September. The work was not progressing well in some sections.

He said flood control measures undertaken in Thiruvananthapuram city had so far been successful. The final report on the work to be taken up on a long-term basis would be obtained shortly, he added.
