MCD acts tough on dengue control

Staff Reporter

Maximum number of cases have been reported from Najafgarh Zone

The number of dengue cases reported from different areas of the Capital reaches 60

Disciplinary action against guilty malaria inspectors and assistant malaria inspectors

NEW DELHI: Even as the number of dengue cases reported from different areas of the Capital reached 60 on Monday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi claimed that it was taking action against its defaulting Health Department officials for dereliction of duty and absenteeism apart from issuing challans to the public.

Addressing a press conference, acting Mayor and Malaria Committee chairperson Devya Jaiswal said: “The MCD has been acting tough against defaulters both among its own staff as well as the public. Besides initiating disciplinary action against the guilty malaria inspectors and assistant malaria inspectors for dereliction of duties, we have placed under suspension 72 of our domestic breeding checkers for various acts of indiscipline. More than 1,000 prosecutions have taken place this week alone for mosquito breeding within the premises.”

“However, after having received a number of complaints against the impolite behaviour of our domestic breeding checkers we have asked them not to succumb to the pressure of issuing challans but instead satisfy the defaulters by showing the mosquito breeding spot found in their premises as well as explaining them ways to prevent dengue, ” he added.

Mr. Jaiswal informed that of the 60 dengue cases reported so far, 50 had been reported from the MCD area, five from the NDMC area and one each from Delhi Cantonment, Railways and Uttar Pradesh while the remaining two cases were still under investigation.

Of the 50 cases from the MCD area, the maximum number of cases have been reported from Najafgarh Zone followed by West Zone.

According to the civic body, Health Department officials have found mosquito breeding in 58,051 houses and 54,753 people have been issued legal notices and 5,395 have been issued challans for presence of mosquito breeding in their premises or encouraging conditions conducive for the same.

The acting Mayor also informed that a total ground level staff of 5,200 people including 3,200 domestic breeding checkers was engaged in the civic body’s dengue prevention campaign apart from the supervisory staff. MCD House deputy leader Ved Prakash Gupta advised citizens to take simple measures for prevention and control of dengue including emptying desert coolers once a week, moping the cooler dry before filling and putting temephos granules in coolers that cannot be emptied or cleaned.
