hot topic: TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu marches along with party MLAs decrying inflation, to the Assembly in Hyderabad on Monday.

HYDERABAD: Legislators belonging to the Telugu Desam and the Left parties marched to the Assembly in separate processions on the first day of its monsoon session on Monday to express solidarity with farmers who are faced with fertilizer shortage and other problems.

While the TDP members led by N. Chandrababu Naidu walked from NTR Ghat on Necklace road after offering floral tributes, the CPI (M) and CPI members arrived a little later from the Old MLA Quarters holding placards and shouting slogans.

Agrarian crisis

Mr. Naidu accused the government of being indifferent to the serious agrarian crisis in the State. There was rampant corruption in irrigation projects. The construction of the underground tunnel of Srisailam project was carried out without observing precautions, he said.

Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy described the rallies, particularly by the TDP, as a drama to gain political mileage. Inside the House, members cut across party lines to pay glowing tributes to M. Sikhamani and Chanumolu Venkatrao, Congress MLAs who died recently, and pleaded for naming specific projects after them to perpetuate their memory, on the first of the Assembly’s monsoon session on Monday.

Condolence motion

The members adopted a condolence motion tabled by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, expressing grief at the deaths and sympathies to the members of the bereaved families. Members observed two minutes’ silence as a mark of respect to their memory.

Marketing Minister M. Mareppa pleaded for naming the Kulakurthi lift irrigation scheme in Kurnool district after Sikhamani while Animal Husbandry Minister M. Buddha Prasad wanted the flyover planned over the railway track at Pamulapadu Bridge near Vijayawada to be named after Chanumolu.

The Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu recalled that both MLAs began their political career as sarpanches and they were elected to the House repeatedly as they did good service to the people.

The Assembly adjourned for the day without transacting any other business.
