SRINAGAR: For the first time in past 15 years, newspapers published from Kashmir failed to hit the stands in the wake of strict curfew restrictions. All the newspapers, numbering around 30 in both English and Urdu, had to suspend their publications. The CRPF did not allow journalists and other staff of newspapers to move out and failed to honour the curfew passes. On Sunday, 13 journalists were beaten up by the CRPF. The civil authorities also failed to ensure the free movement of journalists. “We have not seen such restriction even in 1990,” said a journalist. Some newspapers that have online editions, however, kept updating their sites. Vehicles of newspaper organisations, including Greater Kashmir and Kashmir Uzma were seized by the police and not allowed to move. “This situation may continue tomorrow also” said an official of a local newspaper. The local cable network news channels have already been banned.
