Police custody for 5 SIMI activists

Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD: The alleged kingpin of the serial bomb blasts here, Safdar Nagori, has been remanded to police custody till September 3.

Nagori, who was brought here on Sunday from the Rewa jail in Madhya Pradesh, was produced before the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court late on Monday evening. The police sought 14-day remand but the court granted remand till September 3 on a plea from his lawyer that he was not keeping good health.

Nagori’s four accomplices, all SIMI activists, who were brought from the Indore jail and produced before the metropolitan court on Sunday, were also remanded to police custody till September 3. Amid these developments, the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service panel has decided to appoint armed commandos at all its 10 bus depots here. A spokesman said the decision was taken as the AMTS buses were often the target of terror attacks. In the July 26 serial blasts, one of the bombs exploded in an AMTS bus, killing one passenger and injuring many. There have been cases of tiffin bombs being left in the AMTS buses.

In addition, the AMTS had also created checking squads of its staff members who would regularly check the buses to ensure that no unclaimed luggage was left behind in the buses.
