dated August 26, 1958: Role of China

China was seen by Western diplomatic observers in London on August 24 as the enigma behind exchanges going on between the Western Powers and the Soviet Union about a Summit Conference and an end to nuclear tests. The West is now awaiting Moscow’s reply to two recent notes. Observers believed Moscow was consulting Peking on these issues. The declaration signed three weeks ago by Mr. Nikita Khrushchev and Mr. Mao Tse-tung was taken by many there to show that China has now a powerful voice in the affairs of the Communist world.
