MORE JOB OPPORTUNITY: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee (right), West Bengal Chief Minister, with Ashish Jhunjhunwala, Managing Director, Ramsarup Industries, during a seminar in Kolkata on Monday.

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Monday emphasised the need for setting up of steel downstream units in the State in the wake of the upcoming projects in that sector. “Small and medium scale units create much more job opportunities than large units,” he said.

Addressing a meeting on opportunities in the downstream sector in the steel industry, he said there were hardly any steel downstream units in the State, which create scope for value addition, although at least four big companies had signed up with the State government to make investments in West Bengal.

“New companies have stated their intention of investing in steel units in West Bengal and their projects were progressing”, he said. He also indicated that the State’s investment in this sector would double over the next few years. He, however, expressed concern about the availability of iron ore.

While Monday’s meeting, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, saw the participation of steel companies and steel service companies, including JSW, Tata Steel, Usha Martin, Tata BlueScope, Ramsarup Industries and Adhuniks, it is Mr. Bhattacharjee’s meeting with the industry bigs on Tuesday which is attracting greater attention.

Being held under the aegis of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India and in the backdrop of the Tatas’ withdrawal threat and the Singur imbroglio, the interactive session is likely to see the participation of most of the major industry houses.
