Early gains not fully held on BSE

MUMBAI: The BSE benchmark Sensex on Monday rose for the second consecutive day to close nearly 49 points up, although it pared early gains after European markets opened weak.

The 30-share BSE barometer resumed with an upside gap of nearly 242 points and immediately touched a high of 14672.69 before succumbing to selling to settle the day at 14450.35, a rise of 48.86 points over previous close.

Short-coverings as well as winding up long positions ahead of the derivatives contract on August 28 also reflected on the market movement.

Rupee drops 36 paise

The rupee snapped its two day gaining streak on Monday and fell sharply by 36 paise to close at 43.78/79 against the dollar on sustained capital outflows.

In a fairly active trading at the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee resumed slightly lower at 43.43/46 against Friday’s close of 43.42/43. — PTI
