Classical language tag for Kannada sought

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Teachers and students of the St. Joseph’s Pre-university College and members of the college’s Kannada Sangha staged a dharna in front of the Mahatma Gandhi Statue here on Monday urging the Centre to accord classical language status to Kannada. College principal Rev. Fr. Melvin Mendosa said that Kannada has a history of over 2,500 years and is a language that has won the highest number of Jnanpith awards. Ko. Vem. Ramakrishna, director of the sangha, said: “Elected representatives from Karnataka should bury their political differences as far as the language issue is concerned and influence the Centre to get this honour.”
