HYDERABAD: Commemorating the first anniversary of the twin blasts on Monday, rich tributes were paid to those killed in the blasts that ripped through Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park on August 25 last year killing 42 persons. The BJP, Andhra Pradesh Secretariat Women Employees’ Welfare Association, Hyderabad Forum for Justice and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) organised separate programmes to mark the occasion. Children took out a rally holding candle lights and placards with slogans ‘Stop terrorism’ and ‘We need peace in the country’ from Lumbini Park to the Laserium where a powerful explosion took place snuffing out lives of 12 persons. HMDA Commissioner K.S. Jawahar Reddy and film actor Rajasekhar and his wife Jeevita also paid tributes at a pylon constructed in the memory of the 12 persons killed in the blast at the Laserium. Addressing a meeting at Gokul Chat, senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu launched a scathing attack on the Congress for its failure to contain terrorist activities even after a series of bomb blasts continued to occur in different cities. He said that Hyderabad had become a safe place for terrorists due to the government’s failure in handling them. Terrorists were taking shelter with the active support of a political party, he alleged. “Why is this soft corner towards terrorists who are trying to destabilise the country’s economy?” he questioned. He also accused the Central and State governments of weakening the Police Department leading to tardy progress in nabbing culprits involved in the bomb blasts. Mr. Naidu called upon people to be united in thwarting the attempts of anti-national elements.
