NEW DELHI: In an attempt to give police, security personnel and special forces an edge in fighting terrorism and naxal violence, the Union Home Ministry plans to set up 20 counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism jungle warfare training schools. “All the 20 schools will become functional by 2010-11 and will be set up in five States — Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Assam. We plan to train nearly 15,000 police personnel every year,” a Home Ministry spokesperson said here on Monday. In stages By the middle of next year, the Ministry hopes to establish eight schools, another eight by 2009-10 and the remaining four by 2010-11. While the five States will acquire land for setting up the schools, the Centre will provide the trainers, supporting staff, equipment and infrastructure. The Centre will also support the trainers for the first five years. At present, three specialised jungle warfare centres are being run — by the Army in Mizoram, the Central Reserve Police Force in Silchar in Assam, and by the Border Security Force in Hazaribagh in Jharkhand. “These training schools have their limitations ,” the spokesman added.
