Rural Electrification Corporation funding for underground cable project

MADURAI: The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) is funding a pilot project in five districts in the State to bring electricity cables underground. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has already begun implementing the project in Madurai.

A sum of Rs.200 crore has been sanctioned for Madurai to bring overhead power cables underground. The project will be completed in another five years, K. Balasubramanian, Chief Engineer (Distribution) of Madurai region, TNEB, told The Hindu.

A State-owned term lending institution engaged in lending to power projects, REC was originally mandated to fund projects for development of rural power infrastructure — mainly transmission and distribution networks. It has now been given additional mandate to lend to power projects.

Under this project, overhead electrical cables in the urban areas of Tirunelveli, Tiruchi, Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem will be brought underground.

“Applicants for new power connections have the option of registering for underground service connection through underground cables,” Mr. Balasubramanian said.

The REC will release Rs. 40 crore every year for project execution in Madurai district. The amount would be released in tranches. “If there is any cost-escalation, we will appeal for additional funds. If not approved, the TNEB will pitch in the extra funds,” he said.

The funding from the REC is in the form of a loan, which would be repaid by the TNEB with interest. There was no subsidy component involved.

He said that one of the major benefits from the project would be to put an end to the regular power shutdowns for undertaking weekly maintenance, once all cables go underground.
