MYSORE: The district officials of the departments of Excise and Revenue, in a joint operation rescued 300 cows being illegally transported in 16 trucks to slaughter houses in Kerala on Monday. They arrested 15 persons in this regard. Based on a tip-off, the officials intercepted the trucks crossing the border near Bavali and rescued the cattle. The cows have been sent to Beechanahalli police station from they will be taken to Pinjarapole, an organisation involved in the conservation of cattle in Mysore, according to police sources. The arrested have been handed over to the Beechanahalli police. A senior official told The Hindu that the illegal cattle trade had been going on for several years in H.D. Kote and Gundlupet taluks, from where cows were being transported to slaughter houses in Kerala. In order to put an end to this, Deputy Commissioner P. Manivannan formed a team of 35 officials from the departments of Excise and Revenue to catch the culprits. The residents of Bavali alleged that the police and Forest Department officials of the area were hand-in-glove with people involved in the illegal transportation of cows. They claimed that the officials let the vehicles transporting the cows through after collecting bribes. Meanwhile, Shanthi Chordia, Secretary of Pinjrapole, and Ramesh Agarval, Assistant Secretary, sought to know how the transportation of cattle took place when vehicular movement on the road had been banned from several weeks. They alleged that there was a nexus between the officials and the accused.
