HYDERABAD: Government High School (Yousufguda) defeated St. Joseph’s High School (Habsiguda) 25-12, 25-18 in the boys’ quarterfinals of the 20th Regal Sports inter-schools volleyball tournament for boys and girls, for the Naresh Memorial Trophy, organised by Musheerabad Sports Association, here on Thursday. For the winner, Sridhar, Ashok and Ajay combined well, while for the loser Bhanuprakash and Uday Kiran put up a good display. The results: Quarterfinals: Boys: Govt HS (Yousufguda) bt St. Joseph’s HS (Habsiguda) 25-12, 25-18; Govt HS (Jamia Osmania) bt Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan 25-20, 25-21; Sanghi Public School bt DAV (Kukatpally) 25-17, 26-24; HPS Ramanthapur bt St. Joseph’s HS (Malakpet) 25-20, 19-25, 15-10. Girls: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan bt St. Francis HS 25-10, 25-18; KV Begumpet bt St. Joseph’s HS (Malakpet) 25-5, 25-4; St. Philomena bt AECS-I (ECIL) 23-25, 25-8, 15-12; St. Pious HS (Ramnagar) bt Hindu Public School 25-15, 25-9. ICL tie-upThe Indian Cricket League, as part of its Youth Connect Programme (YCP) will tie up with Glendale Trophy under-14 inter-schools cricket tournament, organised by Glendale Academy here, commencing from August 25. Preceding the event, Hyderabad Heroes’ players Ambati Rayudu and Alfred Absolom conducted a cricket clinic to for the budding cricketers from different schools in the City here. As part of this initiative, the ICL subsidiary will not only confine itself as a co-title sponsor but actively involve in the participation, encouragement and inputs for these youngsters. Kiran More, Executive Board member, ICL, said that this would be a long-term initiative with a long-term objective to strengthen grass-root level game and provide exposure to these budding cricketers. Glendale’s spokesperson Umri Bursar said they were happy to be associated with ICL and hoped it would be a major boost to take up the game professionally. Darwin, Hinduja winB.N. Darwin of Kendriya Vidyalaya emerged the champion in the Ranga Reddy District under-17 boys chess championship with four points from as many rounds. In the final round, Darwin outwitted G.V.R.T. Pawan Kumar who eventually finished second with three points. Ch. Shashank and D. Phani with three points each were third and fourth respectively. These four boys will now represent the district in the AP Championship to be held in Hyderabad from September 5 to 7. In the girls section, Hinduja Reddy of Vignana Jyothi Public School won the title with four points while K.N. Mehersoujanya, V.S.S. Priya and M. Namratha finished in that order. These four players will also represent the district in the above mentioned State championship. Rain plays spoilsportThe second day’s play in the ACA North Zone under-16 selection match between President’s XI and Secretary’s XI at Vizianagaram on Monday, was also washed out. The three-day match has been converted into a one-day affair and will be played at the ACA-VDCA stadium “B” ground here on Tuesday. Rain also affected the Vizianagaram District under-16 inter-school tournament at the MR College ground on Monday. Vignan Bharati was declared winner over ZPP HS, Aarikathota through spin of coin.
