PGTI’s new tournament in Chennai

CHENNAI: The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) will organise the inaugural Tamil Nadu Open championship at the Madras Gymkhana annexe, here from August 27 to 30. The Pro-Am event is scheduled on August 31.

The tournament, carrying a total prize money of Rs 20 lakh, seeks to promote golf in Tamil Nadu and bring competitive professional golf back to the state after a gap of three years. The star-studded field includes Ashok Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Rahul Ganapathy, Harendra Gupta, Vivek Bhandari, Uttam Singh Mundy, Shamim Khan, Vijay Kumar, and local favourite Sandeep Syal, to name a few.

Jayanan S. Satagopal, Tournament Spokesperson and PGTI member, on Monday said, “The focus of the tournament is to develop the Tamil Nadu Open Golf championship into the premium golfing event of this region and make it a regular feature on the Indian golf calendar. This new and exciting tournament will provide a major boost to golf in the state of Tamil Nadu.” — Principal Correspondent

Sri Krishna and St. Joseph’s triumph

Sri Krishna College, Coimbatore, and St. Joseph’s College of Engineering won the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the Chennai District Volleyball Association inter-district dawn-to-dusk tournament held at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Sunday.

The results: Men: Final: Sri Krishna, Coimbatore bt SRM ‘A’ 25-20, 18-25, 26-24; semifinals: SRM ‘A’ bt TS Naraswamy 25-8, 25-19; Sri Krishna bt Panimalar 19-25, 25-21, 25-23.

Third place: Panimalar bt T.S. Narayanaswami 25-12, 25-10.

League: Panimalar bt IIT Chennai 25-14, 25-18; Sri Krishna, Coimbatore bt Gurunanak 25-18, 25-15; SRM ‘A’ bt Alpha 25-3, 25-12; SRM ‘B’ bt Agrasan 25-13, 25-14; Sri Krishna bt Scared Heart 25-13, 25-20; T.S. Narayaswamy bt D.G. Vashinav 25-16, 20-25, 25-17; Panimalar bt SRM ‘B’ 25-18, 25-22; SRM ‘A’ bt Loyola 25-10, 25-19.

Women: Final: St. Joseph’s Engg bt M.O.P Vashninav 25-09, 25-14; Semifinals: M.O.P bt Ethiraj 20-25, 30-28, 25-09; St. Joseph’s bt SRM, 25-14, 25-22; Third place: Ethiraj bt SRM 25-15, 9-25, 25-21.

SRM is champion

SRM University won the Cunnan Trophy State-level inter-collegiate basketball tournament, beating Sathyabama 66-63 in the final at DRBCCC Hindu College, Pattabiram here recently.
