Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra dance fest from Sept. 5

Devdasi dance festival begins on Sept. 24

BHUBANESWAR: Come September, which marks the beginning of the festival season for Bhubaneswar, connoisseurs of Indian classical dance and music would be offered a series of treats through four prominent cultural events.

Commencing on September 5, the much awaited three-day annual Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra memorial national festival of dance and music would be staged at Rabindra Mandap. “For the past 13 years, we have been hosting this festival featuring both veteran and promising artistes of the nation, both in the field of classical dance and music, as per the wish of my father and the much revered guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Four legendary artistes of the State in the field of dance, music, theatre and cinema will also be specially honoured on the occasion,” informed festival director Ratikant Mohapatra.

The festival will feature Sattriya, Bharatnatyam and Odissi in the dance segment while Hindustani and Carnatic styles would be in the music segment, he added.

Sufi Kathak

Internationally acclaimed Indian Sufi Kathak dancer Manjari Chaturvedi has been invited by the four-decade-old Bhubaneswar Music Circle to perform at the Rabindra Mandap on September 21. This would be the first occasion to present Sufi Kathak in Orissa, stated BMC general secretary Khirod Patnaik.

Featuring 16 young and brilliant dancers from four countries – India, Japan, US and Peru – the third annual Devdasi national dance festival will be under way in the Capital from September 24 to 26. “This festival aims at providing a platform for the budding dancers who are projected as soloists. This is the only festival of its kind in Orissa that features all the eight Indian classical dance styles. The ritualistic Mahari and Vilasini Natyam dances – both known as the dance of the Devdasis in temples of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh – would be the added attraction this year,” informed festival coordinator Jagabandhu Jena.

Eminent classical vocalist and Guru Damodar Hota has announced to host Tridhara national festival of classical music on September 21 and 22 at Jayadev Bhawan in the city.

It would have representation of the three prominent music styles of India – Hindustani, Carnatic and Odissi, he said, and added that the festival would be an attempt to establish the similarities that exist among the three distinct styles to prove the unity in diversity of Indian classical music.
