CHENNAI: At least one million students will be inducted into the Friends of Police movement, Prateep V. Philip, Inspector General of Police (Social Justice and Human Rights), said here on Monday.

Speaking at the orientation of Friends of Police (FoP) Club at Loyola College, he said 35,000 police personnel and an equal number of volunteers were trained under the FoP programme. About 20 lakh people who took part in the ‘Social Justice Tea Party’ organised in 37,000 villages in the State had also shown interest in joining FoPs.

“While taking forward the thought process triggered by former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam among the youth, we want FoPs to understand they can play a vital role in nation-building,” he said.

In his address, V. Kulandai Velu, senior vice-president, National Union of Backward Classes, SCs, STs and Minorities, said FoPs should get trained in first aid so that they could save lives at times of emergency such as road accidents.

G. Lourduswami, State Administrator FoPs, Rev. Fr. K. Amal, Rector, Rev. Dr. S. Peter, Secretary, and Rev. Fr. A. Albert Muthumalai, Principal of the college, participated in the programme.
