Training for headmasters

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: A United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) -funded management training programme for headmasters of Government and aided schools is being conducted in the city by the Directorate of School Education.

Headmasters of high and higher secondary schools from 10 southern districts were participating in the three-day residential training programme that began on Monday, said Chief Educational Officer R. Pandurangan.

Fifteen headmasters from each district will be trained. While 40 participated in the first batch, 160 others will be trained in four batches. The programme concludes on September 10.

These teachers would be the resource persons to train counterparts in their districts, he said.

Two resources persons from The Netherlands-based ING Group — Ellen Vanden Berg, Human Resource Manager, and Andrea Vander Kuip, Senior HR consultant — handled the training sessions. ING Group is a financial institution that offers banking, insurance, and asset management services.

Sessions on leadership qualities, public relations, time management and administrative skills are being conducted. Similar training programmes were under way at Coimbatore and Chennai also, said Mr. Pandurangan, adding that six HR trainers had arrived from The Netherlands for the sessions.

The Department of School Education hopes to further improve the quality of high and higher secondary schools through human resource training programme for headmasters.

The districts covered at the Madurai training programme are Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Pudukottai,
