KOZHIKODE: Three remand prisoners in the Marad case will be among 500 neo-literates who will appear for the SSLC-equivalent examination from the district, conducted by the State Literacy Mission from August 27 to September 3. A total of 860 neo-literates had registered this year to take the equivalent examination. Ten remand prisoners had registered for the examination, but dropped out, said M.P. Anish, welfare officer at the district jail. He said this was the first time that remand prisoners from the jail were appearing for the examination. The Marad court has directed the jail authorities to make arrangements for the prisoners to appear for the examination at the Government Model Higher Secondary School centre. The prisoners, below 30 years of age, attended the contact classes conducted on the jail premises by teachers of Devagiri Higher Secondary School, Devagiri College and Palazhi Higher Secondary School and literacy mission preraks. They were provided orientation in information technology, which was part of the syllabus. Fee concession was given by the government and books and learning materials were provided free.
