Ganja worth Rs. 5 lakhs seized
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: In a joint operation, vigilance enforcement and excise sleuths on Tuesday intercepted a car carrying huge consignment of banned narcotics substance, ganja, worth about Rs. 5 lakhs near Pedakanani on the National Highway No 5.
The consignment packed in 170 gunny bags weighing 160 kg is worth more than Rs.5 lakhs, making it one of the biggest seizures of its kind.
Last month, the vigilance sleuths unearthed about 150 bags of ganja.
Giving the details of the operation to reporters here, Regional Vigilance & Enforcement Officer P.J. Vijayakar said that the excise and vigilance officers spotted a white ambassador car (AP 5 S 3025) speeding away on the NH 5 towards Guntur and on suspicion tried to intercept it.
The driver, however, sped away on the NH and slipped into an internal road at Pedakakani. The officers passed on the message to the excise police station at Pedakakani who in turn intercepted the car and arrested its driver Ravi and two Tamilians -- Muthuswamy and Murugan.
When the officers searched the car, they found 174 packets of ganja worth more than Rs.5 lakhs.
