‘Support self-financing colleges’

KOCHI: Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed has urged the State government to support the self-financing higher education institutions in the State.

In his inaugural address after laying the foundation stone of the new academic block of the KMEA Engineering College at Edathala, near here, on Tuesday, the Minister said that it was a shame that the State did not have an adequate number of engineering colleges to meet the demands of the Indian industry.

Pointing out that the government would not be able to run all colleges on its own, Mr. Ahamed said that private institutions in the higher education sector played a key role in providing opportunities to the students. He said that students would migrate, if the government failed to support new professional colleges in the State.

Mr. Ahamed lauded the role played by Muslim, Christian, Nair and Ezhava communities in the development of the educational sector in the State. He urged the Muslim community to come forward and try to step up educational facilities for its members.

Coming down heavily on those who had opposed computerisation in the State, the Minister said the country was witnessing a knowledge explosion. He said the National Knowledge Commission had recommended setting up more than 1,000 universities in the country.
