Do not be ‘bystanders’ in ending corruption : Lok Satta chief

HYDERABAD: Lok Satta Party president Jayaprakash Narayan on Tuesday called upon citizens not to be “bystanders” in ending corruption and in ensuring better governance.

Delivering the keynote address at a conference on “A new paradigm of leadership and good governance” organised by the Universal Peace Federation of India headed by former External Affairs Minister Eduardo Faleiro, here, he deplored the fact that, while the country could be proud of being the largest democracy, it must confront the dangers of fragmentation caused by a combination of challenges.

Dr. Narayan called for transforming political culture and institutions through a system of powerful incentives for honesty and good governance and disincentives in the opposite case.

Pushp M. Bhargava, eminent scientist, reminded the gathering of five crucial problems which must be resolved if the country’s future was to be assured—good governance, corruption, education, water and energy.

Women empowerment

V. Mohini Giri, chairperson, Guild of Service, emphasised the importance of empowering women for achieving inclusive governance. G.M. Gurung, Human Resources Development Minister of Sikkim, lauded the federation’s emphasis on character education. Chung Sik Yong, chairman, UPF-Asia, underlined the necessity of strengthening family as the basis for peace, sustainable development and good governance.

K.V. Rajan, executive vice-chairman, Ursula McLackland, secretary-general of the federation, Robert Kittel, director, Peace Education of UPF-Asia, spoke. The conference adopted a declaration on urgent priorities to be addressed by the government and civil society and appointed “ambassadors for peace” from among civil society leaders in Hyderabad.
