NEEDS CARE: A view of the District Stadium in Kolar. KOLAR: The Sir M. Visvesvaraya Stadium in Kolar is all set to get a new look. Several steps have been proposed for reviving the stadium kindling hopes among the people in general and the beneficiary athletes in particular. The zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer, F.R. Jamadar, who paid a surprise visit to the stadium a couple of days ago, was taken aback by its condition prompting him to harp on measures to revive it. The lack of water facility, a dilapidated toilet, the absence of a dressing room for woman athletes, the absence of a compound wall and the like were among the major problems facing the stadium.
“Though the stadium is situated in an urban area, sportspersons and athletes from rural areas too make use of it. Hence, steps are being taken to infuse new life into it,” Mr Jamadar told The Hindu. The issue of construction of a compound wall and posting security personnel at the stadium needs to be taken up on priority. The absence of a full-fledged district-level sports and youth affairs officer has also contributed to the lack of key facilities at the stadium. Following the visit by Mr. Jamadar, students of the New Government Pre-University College cleared weeds and bushes at the stadium.
