PATHANAMTHITTA: The Mar Thoma Syrian Church has expressed concern over the rise in anti-Christian violence and the failure of the official machinery to act. In a statement here on Tuesday, Mar Thoma Syrian Church Metropolitan Joseph Mar Thoma said, “it is alarming to note that religious fundamentalism and terrorism, which are unbecoming of Indian culture, are increasing in States like Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir.” He said the aggression of the fundamentalists on Christian service organisations, workers and the media was contemptible. “In the early centuries of the Christian Churches, the Roman imperialists used to blame the Christians for any disturbances in any part of their empire. It seems that history is repeating. Innocent people are made to suffer,” Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma said. He called upon the authorities concerned to take urgent and effective steps to stop such acts. “It is worth reminding in this context that the governments and the communities that uphold cultural values should join hands and act united,” he said. He called upon the governments concerned to act above communal and political considerations to check violence.
