‘BHEL deliberately holding up supply of equipment’ ‘Centre doing this with an eye on Assembly polls’
JAIPUR: Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has accused the Centre of delaying the supply of equipment for power projects under construction in Rajasthan in view of the State Assembly elections due later this year. She said Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) was “deliberately holding up” the State’s projects. Inaugurating a 132-KV Grid sub-station at Khandar town in Sawai Madhopur district, Ms. Raje said the power production in as many as five units in the State, which were scheduled to be completed this year, had been delayed by three to six months because of BHEL failing to supply the required machinery on time. “These units will have a total capacity of 1,070 MW. They were likely to supply an additional two crore units of electricity a day, which would have been a great help to the farmers in the rabi season,” said Ms. Raje. Ms. Raje affirmed that despite the Centre hindering the completion of power projects “with an eye on the Assembly elections”, the State Government would not reduce the availability of power and continue with the supply for 18 to 20 hours a day to over 35,000 villages. “We have supplied adequate electricity to the agricultural consumers during the last four years and will continue to do so,” said Ms. Raje. The Chief Minister also accused the Centre of delaying grant of funds under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and said the Union Government probably wanted that the people employed under the scheme “should feel discontented and come to the streets” during elections. “The State Government will not allow this to happen,” she added.
